Do I need full coverage or liability insurance?
Many people think that when they pay off their car, it’s a great time to drop down to liability only for insurance. This may be a mistake – but here’s how to figure it out. Can you afford to replace your car in the event of a total loss? For example, if your car is worth $8000, can you afford to replace that cost or go without a car until you can? If you answered “no”, then now is not the right time to switch to liability only.
Should I change my deductible to a higher amount to save on my premiums?
That depends. Again, what can you afford to pay if you have an accident? Would paying a $1000 deductible to fix your car leave you financially strapped? How comfortable are you coming up with the money to pay your deductible? If $1000, $500, or another amount is what is comfortable, then you may want to discuss changing your deductible with your agent.
Do I have enough liability insurance?
The easiest way to answer this question is to ask – what are your assets? Do you own your home, a business, savings accounts, several vehicles, other property? The total of all your assets should be protected by liability insurance.

What does “replacement cost” mean on my homeowner’s policy?
This is insurance that covers your house at a certain value, and includes an additional percentage to cover the actual cost of replacing your home in the event of a total loss, usually 20%. So, if you have your home insured for $200,000, and you have a total loss, and rebuilding costs are $225,000, you are covered with replacement cost insurance. Actual cost insurance only covers the current value of your home or personal property.
Is sump pump or sewer backup coverage included in muy homeowners policy?
No, these two items are separate endorsements that need to be added to your policy to have that coverage. We think this is something you should take seriously; the average cost of cleanup is anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 or more depending on how much value you have in your basement. To have Coverage of $10,000 or more you have to have a Battery Backup System. Coverage’s are subject to underwriting approval and any waiting period.
How often should I see my agent to review my insurance needs?
If there have been no significant changes in your life, reviewing every 2-3 years should be sufficient. However, if you have gotten married, had a child, bought additional vehicles or property, or had any other changes to your life then you need to see your agent with each change.
Do I have home business coverage through my homeowner’s policy?
No, this is a separate endorsement, so if you have a home office, daycare business, or other home business, you will need to purchase additional coverage.
Is my pool covered by my home owner’s policy?
If you are following all the requirements in your policy, then yes. The safest way to know is to see your agent who can explain the requirements to you.
Are my snowmobile, ATV, and other recreational vehicles automatically covered in my auto or homeowners insurance?
No, you will need separate policies for these items.
